Jewelry vs Tatoos
Do you know what’s the hottest in fashion these days – freedom! The beauty is that you can think of the wackiest, wildest of the things, do them and be respected for your freedom of expression. This one’s a great example. My friend Stella had an allergic reaction to some metals. This allergy has resulted in a phobia for jewelry. Even if it is hypo allergic, Stel is dead scared of jewelry. So on her wedding Stel chose to be different and creative. Stel wore wedding tattoos to adorn her on her bridal day. Those were fancy temporary tattoos but believe me they looked cooler than diamonds. As if this was not enough, Stel and her hubby exchanged their wows and got tattoo wedding rings done! And you know what Ton, Stella’s husband, said while exchanging their tattoo rings, “only till death do us apart!”, and literally meant it.
Women Without Jewelry
Women without jewelry... the expression is like night without stars, garden without flowers… wow that was poetic! No, but seriously why is jewelry so synonymous with women or why is essential for her existence?
My curiosity got the better of me and like a research student I started my expedition to find the eternal truth. After talking to a hundred women and exploring the Internet these are the findings of my research - eternal answer to the eternal question.
For woman jewelry is more than just fashion. Most of the times jewelry is a story – your grand dad got this necklace for me on out honeymoon, my parents presented me this pendant when I graduated from collage, my first earrings, my husband’s surprise, and the tale goes on.
Invariably jewelry is an expression of self for women. So there are designs that are bold, simple, sophisticated, dainty, pretty, elaborate, funky, fun, classy, flashy, subtle, elegant, girly, orthodox, classic, stylish and every kind that you can possibly imagine a woman can be.
And one of the most important reasons why women love jewelry – jewelry makes women feel beautiful… from inside. So with so compelling reasons can you still imagine a woman without jewelry? Not fair dude!
Bracelets – "An accessory to adorn your wrist."
One of the most popular adornments in the ancient world, a bracelet is a piece of jewelry that is worn around the wrist. The history of bracelets and their association to mysticism is an interesting lore. Different cultures across the world had different mystic associations to bracelets. Indian women wore bracelets in marriage and associated it symbolically to being married; in Rome, the most popular form of the bracelet consisted of coiled rings with snakehead ends, symbolic of the youthful forces of life. As per some jewelry experts and historians the female bracelet evolved from male warrior rings, related not only to the protection of the hand. And from there it further evolved into a major fashion accessory.
Indian Fashionable Jewelry
While we are talking about jewelry, I didn’t want to miss out on the topic on which every jewelry lover’s heart melts – traditional jewelry. I love to explore history and traditions related to different cultures and their different styles of jewelry. One of my personal favorites has been Indian jewelry. The intricate craftsmanship and lovely designs are a must watch if you haven’t seen till date. The jewelry style is elaborate. Most of this jewelry is hand made making it even more special.
Wow! What a Ring
Now that big cocktail rings and cluster rings are the latest trend, my only concern is the price. Large stones cost exorbitantly high. But this a smart design. Smaller stones are used to create a large cluster ring. Very fashionable. I love it when fashion becomes so affordable
Unique Indian Jewelry
Like people enjoy learning about various cultures and the variations, I enjoy seeing the different jewelry that people I different cultures wear. Look at this beautiful necklace and dangling earrings set with peridot in yellow gold. This set also includes ‘Tika’, an ornament that is worn on the head delicately dangling on the forehead. The design is typically Indian.
I loved the intricate craftsmanship. This design is reminiscent of the ancient Indian royal jewelry. the ‘Maharajas’ and ‘Maharini’s’ of ancient India wore such elaborate jewelry with intricate designs. I loved the design and think it would make perfect bridal jewelry for a bride as beautiful and special.

So how old do you think fashion is? As old as civilization? Well it’s older than that, it accounts back to the prehistoric times. The recent discovery from the caves of Blombos in Africa is shocking. 41 shells, with perforations and wear marks indicating usage, have been found. This reports usage of jewelry some 75,000 years ago. Wow! So now we know where these genes come from. Flinstones your fashion ain’t that original!
